Another hybrid Porsche on the way

Porsche announced today that it's developing a hybrid version of the Panamera, a four-door GT car that will debut in a traditional combustion engine version in 2009.

The hybrid system will use a combustion engine, plus an electric motor and an additional clutch, along with a battery pack to store power. The system can switch between the combustion and electric motor, or combine power from both, depending on driving conditions. And although we haven't seen specific technical data yet, this system sounds strikingly similar to GM's "two-mode" hybrid system, which can yield anywhere from zero emissions to pretty much standard combustion engine-level emissions, depending on how hard the car is driven. Porsche claims their hybrids will reduce fuel consumption by 30 percent over standard models.

Porsche isn't saying exactly when the hybrid Panamera will go on sale, but says it will be offered at "a later date" than the purely gas-powered 2009 Panamera. It could be a while, since Porsche recently announced that the hybrid version of its Cayenne SUV would be delayed until 2010.

First drive: 2008 BMW M3 Coupe

As a fan of the predecessor to this current M3, the e46, I was skeptical about driving what some called a heavy, underpowered car that didn't quite live up to its ancestors' legacy. A few die-hard enthusiasts, amid cracking tired Bangle jokes that are oh-so-five-years-ago, called it the MPIG, bemoaning the addition of more sensors and high-tech gadgets that added weight and deterred DIYers. And I almost bought into it.

Sure, I'll never love the look of the car like I love the e46. But the new M3 is, for better or worse, one of those cars you have to drive to truly appreciate.

On a recent press trip in Monterey, we had the opportunity to drive the M3 as it should be driven: On empty, windy roads. And later, even better: Madza Raceway Laguna Seca.

The 2008 M3 is powered by an all-new, 4.0-liter V8 engine. This is a drastic departure from the inline six used on the previous generation of the 3 Series cars. The bigger motor catapults the output to 414 horsepower at 8300 rpm, with 295 pound-feet of torque. But the sound of the car remains refined. The engine sounds big, but still reminiscent of M3s past. Sure, there are bigger engines out there, but the M3 is powerful without being raucous. Acceleration is still plenty fast, and the engine revs so high, you could drive around town without changing gears -- if you really wanted to.

On the road portion of our drive, my driving partner and I were amazed at how soft the ride was while driving over uneven pavement. This was due to an optional Electronic Dampening Control (EDC) feature on our car which has three suspension settings: comfort, normal, and sport. But even in "comfort" mode, softness didn't equate to mushiness. The car still felt dynamic and responsive, even while going over potholes and railroad tracks.

The steering was about as tight as I'd ever felt on any BMW. Although faced with a slew of considerably sharp turns as we wound our way through the hillsides, I never had to take my hands off the three-and-nine position. And the nice thick M wheel was comfortable and pleasurable to grip.

At the track, it was time to take it to a whole other level. My manual coupe really let it rip when I got on the throttle, and the brakes bit down hard and fast before the turns. Even though I was only on stock Michelin Pilot Sport tires, the car stuck like glue through the apexes, and the car's back end came around nicely as I gave it more gas out of the turns. Only a few times did I push it hard enough to get those tires to "sing," but I never felt out of control. Admittedly, I did the whole track in third gear, but even so I never lacked for power or torque.

That said, the 2008 M3 is not a "track car" in the true sense of the word. But that's not the point. The beauty of the e92 M3 is that it can be a sensible, dignified daily driver, and still tear it up on track days. And although I am coupe-biased, I think the re-introduction of the M3 sedan will even further the M3's image of an all-around car that can serve many purposes and still be a thrill to drive.

Oh, and about that heaviness thing; BMW lightened the new chassis up quite a bit to compensate for the weight increase. An aluminum hood and suspension, as well as a carbon-fiber roof, shave some weight off, although the "unladen" weight of the coupe is still 3704 pounds, with the sedan weighing in a tad heavier at 3726 pounds. By comparison, the e46 M3 coupe is 3415 pounds. So just imagine the kind of horsepower boost the 2008 M3 could get if it were 300 pounds lighter. But if you're the kind of person who's bothered by that kind of heft, you're probably better off buying an old M3 and ripping all the seats out.

AutoRAI 2003: the concept cars

The Alfa Romeo Scighera was one of the oldest show cars present this year. But this design by Fabrizio Giugiaro, son of the well-known designer and founder of the ItalDesign studio Giorgetto Giugiaro, looks timeless. It's a mid-engined super sports car aimed to connect Alfa's modern technology to their famous racing past. At the time of its introduction at the Geneva Auto Show in 1997 the board of the Fiat Group, of which Alfa Romeo is a part, weren't impressed by it and more or less neglected the car., but in the way time works this was all to change, as you'll see further on.
The name of this car refers to a type of fog and in this case indicates secrecy and stealth. Originally it was presented in full red Alfa Romeo racing livery, but later its paint job was changed to this more sedate metallic grey, reminiscent of its ancestor, ItalDesign's BMW Nazca of 1991.

The Scighera is not just some show car, it's actually fully registered for road use. Even a limited scale production was considered for some time by ItalDesign. It's powered by Alfa's 3-litre V6 from the 164 sedan model, which is boosted to produce some 400 hp by a twin-turbo system. To get this amount of power on the road it features the four wheel drive technology from the Lancia Delta Integrale (which was also offered on the Alfa 155) and a 6-speed sequential transmission. At a vehicle weight of 1200 kg it must be a bomb to drive.
To ensure a limited vehicle weight the chassis frame is constructed from aluminum-carbon fibre composite material and the body is made from aluminum. If it gets hot under the dome like glass roof the side panels can be removed to let some air in. For easy access the roof panels fold upwards when the doors are opened.

It's an amazing car to look at, but it must have cost a fortune to build and to be honest: I liked the original Nazca better.

The Brera is a more recent attempt by ItalDesign at designing an Alfa Romeo sports car, and it looks to be a more viable one too. It was first shown at the 2002 Geneva Auto Show and remarkably its characteristics are not that much different from the Scighera, they're only more realistic in execution. The Brera is also constructed from lightweight materials, with a body made entirely from carbon fiber, and features 400 hp with all-wheel drive and sequential transmission as well. Only in this case a 4.2-litre V8 of Maserati origin, placed in front of the passengers compartment, is used to obtain a 402 hp power output.
It seems that ItalDesign is very committed to giving Alfa their sporting heritage back and after getting a shoe in at the Fiat Group by designing the Maserati coupe and spider the Giugiaros seized the opportunity to make another attempt at an Alfa sports car. And this time they found an open door at Alfa for this project. While the Fiat Group is in dire straights at this moment and looking frantically to expand their market, Alfa Romeo is committed to return on the US market. To make a big entry and to establish a selling point of stylish sportiness a model emphatic conveying these aspects is very much needed. And that's where Alfa and ItalDesign found each other.

This time the design is credited to Giugiaro senior and the exterior is not so much timeless as it is modern contemporary. It has the "blob" like appearance as shown by a number of concepts by other manufacturers/designers, apparently the current fashion for 2+2 GT cars. But its razor sharp front-end design, the creases on the sides and the pointy rear makes this design stand out in a positive manner. The long, aggressive nose makes no secret of the road-devouring potential of this car, and its width (1.9 m) combined with its low height (1.3 m) makes it seem to have a rock-solid road holding.

What impressed me most about the Brera was not its exterior design, but its interior. What is it with Italian designers that they can make utilitarian objects like buttons, switches and levers look so desirable? The interior is both wonderfully classic as it is uniquely modern. I love it.

Alfa Romeo is contemplating to start a limited production of 1.000 Breras, slightly adapted to mass production at more or less affordable prices. That reminds me of the Alfa Romeo SZ, Alfa's previous attempt to revive times of old. Still, it would make an enticing addition to the current range of Alfa Romeo models.
Added 2006: now we know that the Brera concept has in fact spawned two production models, the Brera coupe and the Spider cabriolet. The production coupe looks remarkably like the concept, though it has been completely redesigned. Unfortunately the interior design of the concept has not been carried over. The Spider, without the bulgy roof, looks even better than the coupe.

Hyundai Motor India Limited plans to launch its new 800cc car in India in next three to four years. Research teams from Hyundai in Hyderabad and Chennai shall jointly work on the new car concept that would compete with Maruti's 800cc car directly in the small car segment.
“We are working on a 800cc car which will be similar to the Maruti 800. The car is under joint development in our Indian and Korean R&D facilities. The ultimate desire is to become India’s largest car maker,” said Hyundai Motor India MD & CEO H S Lheem.
Maruti Suzuki currently leads the small car segment in India with Hyundai trailing at the second position. HMIL plans to expand its market share and occupy larger market share in the country. It has set a target of 22 percent market share in the current year.
“The small car market is going strong and will continue to do so. Our small car will be meant for both the domestic and the export market. However, we neither have the technology nor any plan to fight the Nano,” said Lheem.
Hyundai also plans to bring its new model i20 in India by the year end. The new model shall be launched in Paris Auto Show in October this year. Hyundai currently sells 20,000 i10 per month which records as the highest selling model for the company. HMIL has already sold 2 lakh units this year and exported more than one lakh cars.

The Toyota Corolla is arguably Toyota's second-most-important model, and it took a long time for a new version to get here. The look certainly mimics the current-generation Camry, with an angled grille and sharp headlights. The exterior may not be radical, but Toyota rarely dares too much, especially in mainstream cars. That's why it has Scion, after all.Inside gets a nice new look — everything seems clean, simple and well-laid-out, hopefully with improved materials.Power for Standard, LE, XLE and S trims is rated at 132 horsepower from a revised version of the previous four-cylinder engine, with mileage figures of 27/35 mpg city/highway. There aren't any specifics on mileage with the different transmission choices yet. The outgoing Corolla gets 28/37 mpg using new 2008 EPA testing. A performance XRS trim level will reappear for 2009 with the same 158-hp four-cylinder found in the Scion tC and xB. It gets 22/30 mpg in this application and is mated to either a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic.We'd expect prices to stay close to the $14,405-$15,615 starting prices of the 2007s, as has been the trend for other recently redesigned models.

The Honda FCX Clarity is a hydrogen fuel cell automobil manufactured by Honda.

Currently there are more than twenty 2002 prototype-based, leased vehicles in the hands of customers in three different American states, including the state of New York, city of Las Vegas, Chula Vista, San Francisco and the South Coast Air Quality Management District.

Limited marketing of a latest fuel cell vehicle based on the 2007 concept model is to begin in 2008 in Japan and the United States. Honda believes it could start mass producing vehicles based on the FCX concept by the year 2018.

After months-and-months of hype the BMW 135i is finally coming to America. The smallest sedan in the current BWM line-up may be its most exciting. At 306-hp the twin-turbo 6-cylinder engine still expected to rate around a 31-mpg. The hype has been huge for the 135i and nearly every indication seen so far shows that BMW has delivered with this car. Even Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear (a known BMW critic and ridiculer of BMW drivers) judged the 135i very favorably in a recent test. If you can find one at MSRP and without all the extras in 2008 then grab it up. It is the well equipped price of nearly $50,000 that keeps the 135i from being Number 1 on this list. Well… that and the car that IS Number 1.

Being a fan of the IS-350 it was very pleasing to me to see Lexus bolster their line-up by building up a purely athletic model from their IS body. The IS-F punches out 400-hp and accelerates in a zero-to-60 test in the mid-four second range. It will be interesting to see how the IS-F fares against the BMW M class, Audi S4’s and Mercedes-Benz AMG’s. No matter the comparisons in class the Lexus IS-F will give plenty of people another reason to stop by their local Lexus dealership… and for some of us our first exciting reason to stop by a Lexus dealership.

Speaking of classic muscle the Chevy Camaro comes in at number 6 just ahead of the Challenger. Part of the reason for the Camaro’s edging out the Challenger is price (Chevy intends to make the Camaro comparable in price with the Ford Mustang… although I am not sure which variation of the Mustang they are targeting) and part of the reason is I just favor the design of the Camaro. The new Camaro not only takes from the classic lines of the 68 Camaro model, but in part provides a more interesting modernization of its classic heritage. Expect GM boys to gobble up the Camaro as fast as GM can build them.

A group that keeps tabs on toxic car chemicals has released a study showing that new cars are improving in terms of the amount of interior toxins they off-gas: What we euphemistically call "new car smell." General Motors, Mazda and Nissan showed the greatest improvements over the inaugural year of the survey, according to HealthyCar.com. The best performing vehicle this year was the Acura RDX, which scored a 0.6 on their incomprehensible 10-point scale. It wasn't all coming up roses, as there are still many vehicles emitting that oh-so-pleasing and apparently oh-so-toxic smell.

Now this entity is a producer of Lada 2107 within the full assembling cycle, AK&M reports.

The cooperation between AvtoVAZ and Lada Egypt started in 2002. In 2006 the new assembling production line was launched as having the increased production capacities.

Lada 2107 is rather popular in Egypt; over the 8-month period 1.8ths auto sets for this model were delivered.

Russia’s largest carmaker AvtoVAZ [RTS: AVAZ] announced on Thursday plans to start production of Lada off-road vehicles in Egypt in summer 2008.

Production will be handled by Lada Egypt, a local car assembly plant, which will produce Lada 4×4 cars from AvtoVAZ auto components. The Russian auto manufacturer plans to deliver over 900 auto kits for the vehicle’s production at the Egyptian plant in 2008.

In 2007, AvtoVAZ produced and shipped 3,312 auto kits for Lada 2107 assembly at the Lada-Egypt plant, and plans to deliver over 5,300 sets for the manufacture of the vehicles in Egypt in 2008.

Pre-teen Trenton Briley dominated the competition during Round One of the Mickey Thompson/Kalgard Lubricants SXS Stadium Series presented by Skin Industries.

Briley climbed his way to the podium by working hard. He overcame issues that took him out of first position and threw him back into the pack. Driver Connor Hart was in the lead when Briley took him on in a head-to-head battle in his Trophy Kart. At the finish, Briley took the win.

The Middle School student's Trophy Kart has a LTR 450 Suzuki quad racer motor. “We use K&N air and oil filters,” said Trenton’s father Rob Briley. “We have dyno records that show we pick up 5 horsepower on a 40 horsepower motor. K&N helps us out on and off the track. We’ve used K&N for as long as I can remember on our street cars and trucks. K&N is a well known product in our family.”

Briley placed 2nd overall in the J1 Modified Elite Trophy Kart Class in the 2008 SXS National Series and placed 9th overall the 2008 CORR Series Modified Elite Class. He was in the video From the Dirt and will have a spot in From the Dirt Part Two.

The Acton, California resident races almost three weekends every month. “We have to stay focused,” said Natasha Briley, Trenton’s mother. “We’re busy. Trenton is also competing in a complete Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series in a 450 modified.”

This year's Nürburgring 24-hour endurance race will feature perhaps the most wicked Audi R8 yet: a lightweight, custom-built racer that makes the road car look tame by comparison. To comply with the requirements for participation in the race, the stock 4.2L V8 donates its block and is rebuilt from there. The race-spec motor's displacement drops to 4.0 liters but it delivers a hefty 530 horsepower and 353 lb-ft of torque. The R8's stock front and rear bodywork is replaced by new, widebody carbon kevlar panels. Those outboard intakes in the nose are replaced by blanks, and out back, the custom exhaust's dual outlets poke through the spot where the license plate would reside on the production car. Other obvious additions are the front splitter, large rear wing, rear diffuser, and multiple cutouts in the aft bodywork to help with engine cooling. The entire package weighs in at just 2,755 pounds -- this thing should absolutely haul. German magazine Sport-Auto has been covering the car's development. We'll see how the car fares in competition next week.

January sees the launch of the 260bhp (253 lb-ft of torque) Impreza WRX STi. Two versions will be available in the UK – the ‘standard’ STi and the special edition STi Prodrive Style with Prodrive-designed spoilers, grille and front bumper.

Both will be designated and badged ‘Type-UK’ as Suburu seek to distinguish them from grey imports which. Subaru are keen to differentiate them from ‘grey’ imports which do not have European Type Approval and they are providing extra features to differentiate them too.

Amongst the additional features included for the UK are the security features necessary to discourage scrotes from making off with the new toys. These include a Category One alarm/immobiliser and a satellite tracking system. Type UK cars also get enhanced rust proofing locking wheel nuts and a three year/60,000 mile warranty plus three year membership of Subaru Assistance.

WRX STi styling features include smoked glass projector beam headlamps, bigger bonnet air intakes and a single large-diameter rear exhaust pipe. Other shared differences to the regular WRX include special gold-coloured spoked alloy wheels, colour-keyed sill spoilers and an interior featuring blue suede-effect seats with STi logos and red stitching for the steering wheel, gear knob and handbrake lever.

In addition, the STi Prodrive Style features a massive high-riding boot spoiler, newly designed sill spoilers and a deeper, squarer front bumper. The grille and badging resemble the WRC rally car. Interior enhancements over the standard STi include dark blue-coloured instruments with red needles. Also inside - and sure to please gadget freaks - is the switch to spray the intercooler with water.

The Impreza STi will be available in four colours: WR Blue Mica, Blue Black Mica, Premium Silver Metallic and Pure White, the latter two being special order only. Provide Style customers can choose between WR Blue Mica and Blue Black Mica. The Prodrive Style costs £27,495 on-the-road.

Performance? 148mph and 0-60 in 5.2 seconds.

ENGINE

Up to 80 per cent of the STi’s all-alloy engine is new compared to the standard turbocharged 2.0 litre four-cam ‘boxer’ unit as fitted to the regular Impreza WRX. In order to meet the stringent Euro3 exhaust emission levels, the catalyst is uprated, the air-fuel ratio sensor modified and special multi-hole fuel-injectors fitted.

Engine strength and rigidity are boosted by using semi-closed-deck cylinder blocks, reshaping the piston head, fitting screw-in type connecting rods and using forged pistons and shimless valve lifters. Also aimed at high-rev durability are sodium-filled exhaust valves and hollow intake valves.

A larger intercooler and air intake provide better cooling and a special intercooler water spray is fitted, operated by the driver with the water tank fitted in the boot. Also specially fitted to the STi is Subaru’s Active Valve Control System – variable valve timing – which ensures maximum engine response over a wide rev-range.

The result is a maximum power output of 265 PS (261.5 bhp/195 kW) at an accessible 6,000 rpm and 253 lb ft (343 Nm) torque at an equally usable 4,000 rpm. This compares with the standard WRX figures of 218 PS at 5,600 rpm and 215.4 lb ft of torque at 3,600 rpm – significant increases of 47 PS and 37.6 lb ft.

As with the normal WRX, the horizontally-opposed four-cam, 16-valve ‘boxer’ engine has a bore and stroke of 92x75 mm for a capacity of 1,994 cc and runs on an 8.0:1 compression ratio.

While not a top priority for performance car owners, fuel economy is a respectable 29.7 mpg on the Extra Urban cycle.

TRANSMISSION

The European version of the STi features the same completely new six-speed transmission as the Japanese model.

This short-throw close-ratio ‘box’ has been designed to withstand high torque outputs and features extra rigidity thanks to expanding the distance of the main gear shaft by 10 mm and increasing the facewidth of the gears.

Instead of turning the STi’s sixth gear into an economy-orientated overdrive, Subaru’s engineers have chosen low gearing for lively acceleration. For example, the STi’s fourth gear virtually matches third on the standard WRX, while sixth pulls 24.5 mph/1000 rpm versus the WRX’s 24.7/1000 rpm.

The clutch is uprated and larger, with increased loading on the clutch cover. Meanwhile, both lubrication and cooling are improved through the use of an oil pump in the main case. Engagement of reverse gear now requires the lifting of a pull-up slider ring.

WHEELS / TYRES / BRAKES

The STi’s wheels and tyres are slightly larger than the standard WRX. The specially designed multi-spoke gold alloy wheels measure 17x7.5 ins instead of 17x7 ins and the tyres grow from 215/45 to 225/45.

Brakes are supplied by Brembo and include an ABS system. Key features include larger ventilated front and rear brakes with four-pot aluminium callipers at the front and twin-pot offset opposed aluminium callipers at the rear.

Actual front/rear brake size grows from the 11.5 ins (292mm)/11.3 ins (288mm) of the standard WRX to 13 ins (330mm)/12 ins (305mm) for the STi.

The enhanced ABS system also benefits from a lateral G sensor and EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution). This ensures maximum braking control.

A good news for all Indian car freaks. Now they can drive Jaguar and Land Rover. Laughing at me? But it’s true. Today I read that TATA has finally bought the Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford Motors.

Here are few opinions and speculations doing rounds.

With the acquisition of Jaguar and Land Rover, does the Tata group have the two big cats of the British automobile industry by the tail?

Analysts are posing this question given the implications of the future emission norms in Europe. But Tata Motors are confident of addressing the challenge.

According to analysts and automobile engineers, Tatas Motors may get choked with fines on Jaguar and Land Rover – the brands acquired for $2.3 billion from Ford Motors on Wednesday – when the proposed emission norms come into force by 2012.

Tatas have decided to retain manufacturing of Jaguar and Land Rover in their home country so it will have also have to contend with the higher cost of production and rising material prices in Western Europe. This apart, since Tatas Motors will have separate supplier base for their India operations, the benefit synergies of scale may not be available – at least for the first five years.

So, what do you think? Will TATAs succeed in reigning in these two horses, and will these cars be introduced for the Indian market soon. The answers to these questions will be clear very soon.

The Mercedes Benz 280 SL, known as the Sports Roadster, was produced from 1967 to 1971 in the W113 platform. These Mercedes came with a 2.8-liter inline six-cylinder engine and, those built for the United States, were equipped with automatic transmission. They also came with rear-wheel drive and an independent rear suspension to improve handling. The 280 SL’s remained mostly unchanged during the 67-71 production years. They were sold as a “Pagoda Roof “ in the SL Class. This particular 280 SL is part of the “Coupe/Roadster” configuration, which has a removable hard top and a soft top. SL’s are comparatively heavy compared to other similar roadsters; however, the use of aluminum panels for the trunk lid, front hood, tonnear cover, and door skins reduce weight considerably. The Pagoda 280 SL is considered a highly desirable collector car and values suggest it as the most wanted compared to the 250 SL and 230 SL. In 1972 the substantially heavier 350 SL and 450 SL replaced the 280 SL.

Astra BM. Astra are an Italian manufacturer who were founded in 1948 and have been part of the Iveco group since 1985. They produce mainly heavy construction trucks, tippers and cement mixers but they also produce dump trucks and tractor units. The model shown is not one of their modern units and was seen in Montese, Italy in 2004.	Bedford TM. This model has a sleeper cab and Detroit V8 and is seen here with a tri axle, sheeted flatbed trailer. Bedford produced the TM series to compete with the more pwerful and modern trucks being imported from Europe and the company was in decline when this model was produced. GM, who own the marque, left Britain in 1986 and Bedford was taken over by David Brown. This truck was seen in 1997 near Dartford.	Bedford TK. This model was first produced in 1960 and was a very popular model throughout the British haulage industry. This truck has been preserved and was seen at a Truck Festival at Swindon in 2002.

Bristol HG6L. These models were built in the 50's and 60's and this model has a GVW of 24 tons. These trucks ceased being maufactured in the mid 60's and this model has been preserved and is often seen in Historic Rallies and road runs. The truck was seen in 2002 at a Truck Festival in Gaydon in 2004.	DAF. This was one of the first models DAF built in the 50's. It was very popular in Holland and soon took a large part of the Dutch market. This particular truck has been preserved and was seen in 2005 at the Truckfest in Peterborough.	DAF 95XF Super Space Cab. Ari. This new model DAF was seen at Gravesend in 2005. This German truck has a lot of custom features including lights and air horns. It is seen here hauling a tri axle tautliner trailer.

DAF CF. Brett. This company supplies the building trade and as well as supplying building blocks, also delivers sand and aggregates. The truck is seen here with a Stas bevelled grade sheeted trailer which would help to prevent the sand from sticking to the sides in transit.	DAF 95. Denby. This Lincolnshire based company has a large fleet of vehicles and hauls all types of products. The truck seen here was taken at a motoway services in Kent in 1998. It comes from the companies depot in France and is showing French number plates.	DAF 85CF 340. MTS. This company is an environmental waste company based in Rochester Kent. It has a large fleet of 2, 3 and 4 axle tankers that are mainly Foden manufacture. This truck was seen at Gravesend in 2003.

DAF 95XF. Tesselaar. This Dutch company has a large fleet of mainly DAF, MAN and Mercedes trucks. The truck was seen parked up for the weekend at Whitstable Kent in 2004. I would imagine it was going to Heathrow airport to pick up overheight cargo that would be taken back to Schipol airport for onward transit.	Dennis. This truck was taken at a truck rally in Kent and is showing a Perkins badge on the grille. Dennis make most of their models for municipal use and this truck was taken in 2004.	Dennis. This truck belongs to the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and was taken in 1974. The water tanker is used for cleaning the roads and you can see the water spray nozzles under the front bumper.

Dodge Commando. This model was brought out on the 1980's and had a model range of 7 to 16 ton for rigids and 18 to 26 ton for tractor units. This Fire Tender bodied truck was seen at a Truck Rally in Peterborough in 2002.	ERF ECX. Coopers. This company from Staffs also has DAF trucks in it's fleet. This ERF has the Olympic cab and is seen hauling a tautliner trailer. It was seen at Gravesend in 2005.	ERF E6. Zippo Circus. This truck was seen at Blackheath in London and was part of a host of older support vehicles when the circus was showing in 2003. Ramps can be seen on it's flatbed and a winch is fitted behind the cab.

ERF ECT. Iddon. ERF are owned by MAN and this model has the MAN TGA cab. The previous ERF model can be seen in the same companies livery onpage 10 of this website. This truck, roped and sheeted, was seen at Gravesend in 2005.	ERF EC11. Shepperson. This four axle truck hauls building blocks and has a self loading Atlas crane designed for this palletised load. This type of vehicle is a very popular format in this part of the building delivery industry. This particular truck was seen at Gravesend in July 2000.	Fiat. This dropsided builders truck was seen in Montese, Italy in 2000. It has a hiab unit behind the cab and is also right hand drive. Modern Italian trucks now adopt the more conventional left hand drive.

Fiat 110. This builders truck was seen in the centre of Bologna where it would have needed permission from the City Council to be there and work . It was probably built in the 80's and was seen in 2002.	Foden S21. This restored truck was seen at a Truck Festival in Kent in 2004. It has a luton bodywork and this model of truck was called the Mickey Mouse Foden because of it's rounded cab.	Foden S10. This truck was seen in Leyton, London in 2004. It was part of some support vehicles for a fun fare. Because of it's long wheelbase it was probaably used to haul building blocks in 1982 when it was first registered.

Foden 4300. Greenham. This Kent based company is seen here with one of it's four axle building block delivery vehicles. It has a self loading crane and was seen in 1994 in a layby at Northfleet adjacent to a popular transport cafe.	Foden Alpha 3000. Intercounty Farmers. This three axle Foden is seen hauling a bulk powder trailer near Gravesend in 2005. Foden, a low volume company who are owned by Paccar, will cease to be produced next year.	Foden Alpha. Alsford Timber. This is the new model Foden owned by a Kent based timber distributor. Their previous model can be seen on page 5 of this website. The truck shown is fitted with a self loading hiab and was seen at Gravesend in 2004.

Foden Alpha.Transtex. This Essex based company does a lot of container work. It is seen here near Gravesend in 2005 after collecting it's load from the Isle of Grain container port.	Ford Cargo. This vehicle recovery truck was used to collect a gypsy caravan from Sussex in 1995. It was used so that the load had a low running height on it's way back to London to be packed for Australia. The packed case can be seen on a Volvo with a low loader trailer on page 5 of this website.	Ford D Series. Tinelton. This old truck registered in 1975 was seen still working in 2002 at Gravesend. This truck model was popular in it's day and had models from 6 to 38 tons.

Ford Transcontinental 4425. This 1980's truck is seen near Gravesend in 1998. The truck has Irish number plates. This model was built in Amsterdam using a cab supplied by the French manufacturer, Berliet.	Iveco Stralis. This Austrian truck is probably owned by Nikolaus Hammerer, a company whose trucks are a common site on British roads. The unit is a truck and trailer although the company has many articulated units. It was seen at Gravesend in 2005.	Iveco. JDT. This Kent company has a small fleet of mixed manufacture model tippers. This is a 1988 Iveco seen at their yard in 1999. Their current fleet are mainly MAN and DAF.

Iveco. Lannutti. This logistic company has 800 employees and is based in most European countries. This Belgian registered truck is seen hauling a glass carrying trailer. The truck was seen in 2005 at Gravesend.	Iveco. Robinsons. This truck was seen at Gravesend in 2005. The truck had probably been to the port of Shoreham to collect it's load of timber. The company is a timber distribution company based in Lewisham, London.	Leyland Marathon. Ravens Haulage. This 1980 registered truck was seen at Northfleet, Kent in 1996. It is carrying steel on it's way back to Sheffield. They are a very rare sight on British roads nowadays but can be seen restored at most good Truck Rallies.

Leyland Roadtrain 17.35. This truck, registered in 1989, was seen at Gaydon in 2004. Leyland were taken over by DAF in 1987 and in 2000 the Leyland name was dropped.	Liaz. This truck is run by the state owned company CSAD and was seen in 1997 at Dartford. Liaz is a Czechoslovakian company that started building trucks in 1951.	MAN. This truck has a bulk trailer fitted with an easy sheet. The truck is privately owned and has a long range fuel tank. It was seen at it's yard in Dartford in 2005.

MAN TGA. CRW. This company has a large fleet of bulk powder trailers. They have a mixed fleet of tractor units and this one is the top of the range MAN unit. They also have a quantity of rigid bulk powder trucks. This MAN was seen at Gravesend in 2005.	MAN. This truck was manufactured in the 60's and was seen in London in 1975. It has Danish registration and at that time was an unusual truck to see on British roads.	MAN TGA. Essex Hay and Straw. This nicely customised truck is part of a small fleet of TGA's that are regularly shown at Truck Festivals. This one was seen at Peterborough in 2005. They are working trucks and normally tow a trailer when delivering and collecting straw bales.

MAN TGA 25.430. Spitzer. This German registered truck and trailer was seen at Gravesend in 2005. It has the new D20 10.5 litre engine developed by Bosch.	Mercedes. This truck was seen at an army rally in Kent in 2004. Probably built in the 50's the model range also included tractor units and were supplied to the army with four wheel drive as shown on this model.	Mercedes 48.48. Camfaud. This truck was seen at it's yard at Dartford in 2005. It has an M52 Putzmeister body that can pump 160 cu mtrs of cement per hour. The truck is 14 mtrs long and weighs 50 ton. The fifth axle is a rear steer axle.

Mercedes Actros 25.46. McKay. This Scottish truck is hauling a refrigerated meat trailer. It has quite a nice livery and looks very new and clean. It was registered in the last few weeks so that explains it's neat appearance. The truck was seen at Gravesend in 2005.	Mercedes Actros 18.40. Offergeld. The truck was seen at Gravesend in 2005. This German logistic company has over 450 trucks. This truck with a glass carrying trailer is based at their depot in Luxembourg.	Mercedes Actros 26.48 Megacab. Rauch. This German truck and trailer unit has demountable body units on the truck and the trailer. This makes loading very quick as all loads would have been pre checked and all paperwork in place when collecting the new boxes for delivery. The truck was seen at Gravesend in 2005.

Marqueset. This truck was seen in London in 1975. Pegaso started making trucks in 1946. During it's life it had dealings with Leyland, DAF, International and in 1990 it was amalgamated into the IVECO group.	Renault GBH 280. Martoia. These bonneted Renaults are very popular as tippers and are a common site on French roads. This one was seen near the French Italian border at Frejus in 2000.

Renault Magnum. Raluy. This Spanish truck has a hired tanker trailer and was seen near a cold storage depot in Dartford in 2005.	Scania 110 Super. C and L. This truck was taken in south east London in 1975. The truck has a spread axle tilt trailer and was parked up for the weekend when taken.	Scania R420 Topline. Morris. This is the new model Scania and it is hauling a walking floor trailer. The trailer is sheeted to prevent the contents from being deposited on the roads. The trailers can hold anything from waste to sawdust. The truck was seen at Gravesend in 2005.

Scania Topline. Red Hawk. This Italian truck and trailer is complete with a very striking livery and attends many Truck Festivals. The truck was seen at Peterborough in 2005. It is designed to carry racing pigeons.	Scania CNG113M. Safeway. This truck is not run on diesel, it is run on gas. Safeway has a small number of these trucks in it's fleet. The truck was seen at Dartford in 2004. Safeway is now owned by the Morrison supermarket chain.	Scania R420. Stobart. This new model Scania is in the new Stobart livery. The old livery can be seen on this website onpage 9. Stobart are one of the biggest transport companies in England and have a mixed model fleet. All their trucks have girls names on the grille. This Scania has the names, Michelle Annelise.

Scania 124L 400. Bontrans. This bonneted Scania is part of a large fleet owned by this Dutch company. Apart from the custom headlights the truck has orange lights on the roof of the truck which are a requirement when operating in the containerport. The truck was seen in Rotterdam in 2004.	Scania 113M 360 Streamline. Traindrive. This truck is part of a small number of trucks that this company owns for training drivers to get their Class 2 and Class1 HGV licences. The truck was seen in Gravesend in 2005.	Scania 124L 420. Travabe. This Topline Scania has Belgium registration. It is hauling a temperature controlled trailer and has the Scania Griffin painted on the side of the tractor unit. The truck was seen in Gravesend in 2005.

Scania I44G 530. This Dutch Topline rigid Scania has 4 axles and is twinsteer. The container on the trailer is an open top container for top loading and overheight cargo. The truck was seen in Rotterdam in 2004.	Seddon Atkinson 275. Ackerman and Niece. Seddon Atkinson became part of the Iveco group in 1992. The truck has an Iveco cab, the “A” on the grille is badge engineering. The truck was seen at a Truck Festival at Peterborough in 2005.	Seddon Atkinson Strato 325. Air products. Air products supply many types of gases and chemicals. The truck seen here is hauling a trailer with many compressed gas bottles. The sign on the side of the trailer indicates the type of chemical or gas on board and any emergency telephone numbers required in case of a road accident or spillage. The truck was seen at a motorway sevices in Kent in1997.

Seddon Atkinson 401. Hammond. This large general haulage company hauls all types of cargo. The truck is seen here with a 20ft ISO container. The truck was seen outside a transport cafe in Dartford in 1996.	Steyr 25 S 31. This truck was registered in 1994 and is seen hauling a tilt trailer. The Steyr is a common sight in Austria, where it is made, but very few British companies used them and this is truck is quite a rare sight on British roads. The truck was seen at Northfleet in 1997.	Terberg. Lamb and Mansfield. Terberg make specialist heavy duty multi axle vehicles and are mainly used in the construction industry. They mainly use Volvo based vehicles and the model shown has the Volvo F7 cab. The truck was seen at a Truck Festival at Peterborough in 1995.

Thornycroft PN/FR6. This truck is was made in 1953 and is now restored. Thornycroft built it's first truck in 1896 and in the early 60's the company was finding it hard to cover it's costs. It was taken over by AEC in 1961 and started to concentrate on heavy duty trucks. The Thornycroft Antar can be seen on page 8 of this website. The truck was seen at Gaydon in 2004.	Volvo FL10. Denton Transport. This Volvo model was nicknamed "The Wendy House" and was quite a popular model amongst fleet owners. It is seen here with a sleeper cab and hauling a tri axle tautliner trailer. The truck was seen in Dartford in 2002.	Volvo FL 220. This truck is hauling a single axle trailer and is delivering beer. Scottish Courage Ltd brew many household name beers and lagers but Foster's is their flagship beer. This truck was seen at Gravesend in 2005.

Volvo F86. Gratton. The truck was first registered 1979 and was seen in preservation at Peterborough in 2005. The F86 was a very popular truck when it was first imported into England and took many sales from the home market manufacturers.	Volvo FM 520. Leuchter. This German heavy haulage company was seen at Dartford docks in 2002 loaded with a tree. It has an unusual load for heavy haulage but the weight and length would require the use of a low loader trailer. The root ball is covered with a tarpaulin to keep the moisture in.	Volvo FH12 420. Perfect. This general haulage company handles most haulage requirements and is seen here with a skeletal trailer and two 20ft ISO containers. They are probably empty as the truck is riding with the lift axle raised. The truck was seen at Gravesend in 2005.

Volvo FL12. Pickfords Vanguard. This four axle flatbed is seen with a hiab crane fitted to the rear of it's chassis. It was seen at it's Amersham depot in 2004. That depot specialised in machinery movement and storage. It has now been taken over by Ainscough.	Volvo NH12 420. Tiel. This Dutch truck was seen in Rotterdam in 2004. The NH model is not imported in England and the very few that can be seen have been specially imported by their owners and are mainly used as flagships for their fleets.	Volvo FM12 340. Walon. This truck has Belgium registration. The car transporter is loaded with eight Citroen cars but with the right car and correct deck loading you can get as many as eleven cars on these transporters. See the ECM transporter on page 4 of this website. The truck was seen at Gravesend in 2005.

The AC/Shelby Cobra was born in the 1960s combining American engineering with British finesse. It all started when Surrey based British sportscar company AC created the Ace roadster which made a small production run before it was rumoured the company went to the very edge of bankruptcy. That is when Carroll Shelby came along and asked the British firm to modify the chassis to accept a V8 and thus the AC Cobra was born providing some competition for the Chevy Corvette.

A small production run and a successful racing career followed, but this was not enough for the AC Cobra to last as the model proved to be a financial failure and ultimately ended when Carroll Shelby discontinued the relationship.

Reports are swirling the Mercedes has plans to switch its entire car fleet over to alternate fuels by 2015. At first blush that sounds impossible, although when you realize that they are throwing in biofuel and hybrid cars along with the more radical electric and hydrogen options, it becomes clear that biodiesel is their real backup plan. The key point being that any engine designed for biodiesel, will also run just fine on fossil fuel based pump diesel.

While the rest of the world has already figured out the benefits of diesel, this would be a much more difficult transition in the US, where it seems they are still firing salvos in the horsepower race with arch rivals Audi and BMW. Perhaps $4+ gas is finally making people reconsider their priorities.

The other problem with this story is that the original source appears to be The Sun, which is kind of like Britain’s answer to the New York Post. So I’m not sure how literally we can take the claims.

The Toyota iQ, which was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show, will go on sale in Japan in October and in Europe a few months later. Lets have a closer look.

Big Space in Small Package
Unlike the Smart Car which can only seat two people, the Toyota iQ has 4 seats, though only 3 of those can accommodate adults. The last one is better used for a small child, a baby seat or a grocery bag. Still, not bad for a car that fits somewhere between the Smart and Yaris in lenght (117 inches).

Three choices of engines and transmissions are in the plans right now. According to Edmunds:

The 2009 Toyota iQ is really meant to enhance Toyota's presence in Europe, and this market will get the choice of an iQ with either a 1.0-liter inline-3 with a five-speed manual transmission or a turbocharged 1.4-liter inline-4 diesel with a six-speed manual. In mid-2009, a 1.3-liter inline-4 with variable valve timing will become available, and it'll feature either the six-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Meanwhile, Japan will get the 1.0-liter inline-3 matched with a CVT.
[...] we can expect the 1.0-liter to produce around 70 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 69 pound-feet of torque at 3,600 rpm. The 1.4-liter turbodiesel will generate approximately 89 hp.

For those concerned about safety, despite its small size, the Toyota iQ received a 5-star safety rating in Euro NCAP testing.

Considering that the iQ weights 1,962 pounds, these engine choices, despite their modest HP ratings, should be more than enough to give a good driving experience.

How Green is It?
According a Toyota engineer, the 1.0-liter gasoline iQ should record 54.1 mpg on the European driving cycle (99g/km of CO2), while the more powerful 1.4 turbodiesel should get 52.3 mpg (106g/km of CO2).

That's pretty good, though in Europe Toyota will have a lot of competition, especially from small diesels.

How Much will the iQ Cost?
The expected price is $13,000, though we won't be sure until Toyota confirms it. We think Toyota should bring the cover over to North-America. Maybe in limited quantities first if they want to test the waters, but we're pretty sure it would sell in urban areas.

So I had a crash course in changing car tyres yesterday. It's really simple, and anyone can do it, even the members of the opposite sex.

I drove to Ang Mo Kio with the spare tyre on, and decided to change the tyres to a better variety. I chose the Eagle F1s to replace the stock Kumho ones. The originals were smaller (185/60/R14) compared to the newer ones (195/55/R15).

The whole tyre change took 45 minutes and $570 after a trade-in of the original tyres and rims for $150.

Structure of Natural Rubber

Natural Rubber is a polymer of Isoprene. To understand the structure of Rubber we shall concentrate on structure of Isoprene. Isoprene is a conjugated diene containing double bonds at alternate position.

Structure of Isoprene: Monomer of Natural Rubber

Isoprene undergoes free radical polymerization like substituted ethylene. Isoprene polymerizes to give Polyisoprene polymer, a simple alkene having each unit still containing one double bond.

Now, polymerization of Isoprene may follow either of the two pathways; either of cis-polymerization or trans-polymerization. The rubber formed from cis-polymerization is called cis-Polyisoprene or Natural Rubber. Similarly, the rubber formed from trans-polymerization is called Synthetic Rubber.

By observing structure of natural rubber we can infer that there is no polar group in this structure. As a result of this the intermolecular forces of attraction are weak Vanderwaal forces of attraction. These forces of attraction are further weakened because of the cis-configuration of all the double bonds that does not permit the close interaction of polymer chains. Thus Natural Rubber (Cis Polyisoprene) does not have a straight chain but has a coiled structure. As a result of this, it gets elastic property.

Synthetic Rubber

Polymerization of deines (molecules containing double bond) to form substitutes for rubber is the forerunner of the enormous present day plastic industry. Chloroprene was the first commercially successful rubber substitute produced in the United States.

The properties of Rubber so formed are determined by the nature of the substitutent groups. For example, Polychloroprene is inferior to natural rubber in some properties but superior in its resistance to oil, Organic Solvents. These differences are due to difference in nature of their monomers: Isoprene (for natural rubber) and Chloroprene (for synthetic rubber).

Synthetic Rubber (also known as Gutta-Percha) was obtained by the free radical polymerization of Isoprene. The rubber so formed has all trans- Configuration. As a result of this, synthetic rubber has a highly regular zig-zag chain which cannot be stretched .This accounts for non-elasticity of Synthetic Rubber.

Types of Synthetic Rubber

Neoprene

Neoprene is a polymer of chloroprene. It is also known as Polychloroprene. To synthesize Neoprene its monomer Chloroprene is required. Chloroprene required for this process is synthesized from Vinylacetylene which performs Markonikov addition under acidic condition to produce Chloroprene.

The Vinylacetylene required for above reaction is prepared by Dimerization of acetylene by passing it through an aqueous solution of Ammonium Chloride and Cuprous Chloride at 343K.

The Chloroprene obtained undergoes Polymerization to gives Neoprene. Though no specific catalysts are needed for this process but the polymerization becomes faster in the presence of Oxygen or peroxide.

Note: Polymerization of Chloroprene is 700 times faster than Isoprene.

Uses of Neoprene

It is used in the manufacture of hoses, gaskets, shoe heels, stoppers, conveyor belts and printing rollers etc. It is also used as an insulator.

BUNA–S

BUNA–S is a copolymer of a mixture of 1,3- Butadiene and styrene in the ratio of 3:1 in the presence of sodium (which is polymerizing agent) gives styrene – butadiene copolymer (styrene – butadiene rubber) or BUNA –S. The name BUNA–S is made up of Bu which indicates 1, 3 – Butadiene, NA is for Sodium (Na) and S indicates Styrene.

Properties of Buna–S

It is very tough and a good substitute for natural rubber.
It possesses high abrasion resistance.
It has high load bearing capacity.

Uses of Buna–S

It is used for manufacturing automobile tyres.
It is used for making floor tiles, footwear components, cable insulation etc.

BUNA – N (Nitrile Rubber)

BUNA–N is obtained by copolymerization of 1, 3 – Butadiene and acrylonitrile in presence of a peroxide catalyst. The name BUNA–N is made up of Bu which indicates 1, 3 – Butadiene, NA is for Sodium (Na) and N indicates acrylonitrile.

BUNA-N is resistant to the action of petrol, lubricating oils and organic solvents.

Thiokol

Thiokol is prepared by copolymerization of 1, 2 – dichloroethane (ethylene dichloride) with Sodium Tetrasulphide (Na₂S₄) in presence of Magnesium hydroxide.

Properties of Thiokol

Thiokol is resistant to the action of mineral oils, solvents, oxygen & ozone.

Note : Thiokol is also known as polysulphide rubber. It’s tensile strength is slightly less than that of Natural rubber. It’s different from vulcanized Rubber.

Vulcanized Rubber

Natural rubber is not an important polymer for commercial purpose because of its softness & tacky (sticky) properties. Softness of natural rubber increases with the increase in temperature while brittleness increases at low temperature.

Therefore, ideal temperature for using Rubber is 283 – 335K where its elasticity is maintained. Other properties which decrease the quality of natural rubber are:

It has large water absorption capacity
It has low tensile strength & low resistance to abrasion
It is not – resistant to abrasion
It is easily attacked by organic reagents.

The properties of Natural rubber can be improved by a process called Vulcanization .Vulcanization is the process of introduction of Sulphur bridges between different chains by heating raw rubber with Sulphur at 373-415K. In the absence of catalyst the process of vulcanization is slow. Some additive such as Zinc Oxide is added to accelerate the rate of Vulcanization.

Difference between Vulcanized rubber and Natural rubber

The new or vulcanized rubber obtained has properties that are just opposite to that of natural rubber. These properties are

Vulcanized rubber has excellent elasticity.
Low water absorption tendency
It is resistant to the action of organic solvents
It is resistant to attack of oxidizing agents.

Vulcanized Rubber is an improved form of Natural rubber.

In vulcanized rubber, Sulphur bridges are introduced either at their reactive allylic sites or at the site of double bond. The presence of double bond in the rubber molecule makes it’s highly reactive as it provides allylic hydrogen that permits formation of Cross links between different chains. The presence of these cross links increases the toughness, strength and hardness of rubber. Due to the presence of Sulphur bridges, individual chains can no longer slip over one another but are locked together in a giant size molecule.

Starr crews start huge fight on pit road after truck race

The crews of Todd Bodine and David Starr fought for several minutes on pit road at the end of today's NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway -- overshadowing somewhat Ron Hornaday's victory.

Starr was a menace on the track Saturday. He wrecked three different trucks by driving underneath them, getting loose and driving each up into the wall. The third time he did it to Todd Bodine to bring out the last caution of the race.

Bodine didn't appreciate it much and when the race was over he hit Starr from behind at the entrance to pit road. That prompted Starr to drive up next to Bodine on pit road.

That's when the melee ensued -- looking a whole lot like a benches-clearing baseball brawl -- and it took a phalanx of NASCAR officials to separate everybody.

Everybody got called to the NASCAR Hauler of Doom -- and a good time was had by all. Stay tuned Tuesday for penalties, fines and suspensions.

Oh yeah -- Hornaday won his second straight race just a few days after admitting he took testosterone for a medical condition. Johnny Benson was second, followed by Travis Kvapil, Erik Darnell and Rick Crawford.

Kyle Busch took himself out of a chance to win by speeding on pit road and getting sent to the back of the field.

This truck will be powered by a nice 6.0 Litre V8 engine and it will be able to output a solid 361HP. For a truck, 361HP is not bad, although it could be a bit better. This thing will definitely fly down the open road and the way it’s designed makes it look somewhat aerodynamic. It will only have the option of a six speed automatic transmission, so if you like manual you will need to settle for automatic, at least for the time being. The truck can hit 0-60Mph in just about 5.4 seconds which is about a half second quicker then most sports cars on the market right now. GM has done a lot of tweaks to the sport truck in order to get it prepared for the market and they have done a great job with this model and you should see good results.

The G8 will be able to carry over 1000 pounds in the back of the truck and also be able to tow roughly 3500 pounds, which means you can haul quite a bit with the sport truck. You wouldn’t think by appearance that it would be a strong as it is but it was made to be able to perform like any other truck while at the same time maintaining a sport feel to it.
